Description

216-218 Newhaven Road is a pair of early 19th century, two-storey, seven-bay classical houses with bow ends on the east and west sides. A shop extends out to the west and the buildings are positioned at right angles to No 212-214. The exterior is made of coursed rubble sandstone on the north, east, and west sides, while the south side features rubble that is heavily pointed.

On the southeast elevation, there is a Roman Doric pilastered doorpiece at the re-entrant angle, which may have been relocated from the north elevation. This doorpiece includes rosette motifs in die blocks and a projecting cornice. The entrance has a timber door with a plate glass fanlight above it, and there is a single window to the right.

The west elevation features a late 19th century flat-roofed shop that is advanced at ground level, with two single windows flanking the bow above.

The north elevation of 216 and 218 has three bays, with the ground floor openings blocked. The first-floor window in the outer right bay is blinded, while there are single windows in the remaining bays to the center and outer left. The adjacent property, 55 Hawthornvale, has four bays with droved quoins and droved long and short surrounds to the windows. Its entrance is blocked, and there are blinded windows on the ground floor in the bays to the right and outer left, along with a blinded window on the first floor above. Single windows are present on both floors in the remaining bays.

The east (rear) elevation features a two-storey, single bay bow made of coursed rubble sandstone, with droved long and short quoins and stugged and polished surrounds to the windows. It has a projecting cornice and single windows on both the ground and first floors.

The windows include two-pane timber sash and case windows on the west elevation, a four-pane sash and case window on the north elevation in the penultimate bay to the right at the first floor, and 12-pane sash and case timber windows in the remaining openings. The roof is a swept piended grey slate with a coped stone stack.

The interiors were not seen in 1996. There is also a boundary wall made of rubble at the rear of No 55, featuring droved coping. It has a droved long and short stone surround to a pedestrian gateway, a stone entablature, a projecting cornice, and timber gates for vehicular access.
