Description

39, 41, 43, 45 and 47 Rose Street is a four-storey building with a mansard attic, designed by P L Henderson in 1898. This seven-bay Free Style office features a public bar and shops at ground level. The ground floor is constructed from red sandstone ashlar, while the upper levels are made of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. Narrow pilasters frame the ground floor, which has plate glass windows, while the first floor features arched windows. The second floor includes windows with mullions and transoms, topped by a cornice. The central bay is highlighted by narrow pilasters, and the outer bays are slightly advanced. The building has splayed corners with two-leaf panelled doors set in arched doorpieces, and canted oriels above. The second and third floors have bipartite windows, with tripartite windows at the center. At the third floor, there is a tripartite arcade framed by Ionic columns. The eaves cornice is raised at the center, and the mansard roof has six corniced timber dormers.

The return elevations are simple with three bays, while the rear elevation has seven bays with bipartite windows. The windows throughout are timber plate glass sash and case and casement types. The mansard roof is covered with grey slates and features corniced wallhead ashlar stacks.

Inside, the building retains its original bar interiors.
