Description
The Dovecote, located at 2 Dovecot Road in Edinburgh, is a single-storey, 9-bay rectangular building designed by Thomas Wallace in 1911. It features a near-symmetrical Arts and Crafts style, with a harled exterior and half-timbered gables. The building has overhanging bracketed timber eaves and projecting cills.
On the south elevation, there are steps leading to an advanced gabled entrance that has a two-bay design. To the left of the entrance, there is a panelled timber door with a fanlight above it, and a single window to the right. The bays to the left include an advanced gable on the outer left and three pairs of windows, while the bays to the right consist of one pair of windows and a single window on the outer right.
The north elevation is a four-bay design featuring a gabled studio window in the right bay, along with a recessed panel and flanking windows. A similar gabled studio window is found in the left bay, also with a recessed panel.
The west elevation includes a lean-to extension on the left side, which has a single window on the outer left and a timber door. To the right, there is a flat-roofed open storage space, with a timber door and fanlight on the outer right.
On the east elevation, there is a single window at ground level on the left, a timber door, and a single window aligned above it.
The building features painted hopper windows, with 6- and 9-pane designs on the south elevation and an 8-pane design on the north elevation. The roof is pitched with grey slate and has coped stacks with moulded octagonal cans flanking the gabled entrance porch and on the outer left.
Inside, there is a large open-plan tapestry studio on the south side, which is illuminated by skylights and north-facing studio windows.
