Description

7, 9, 11, and 13 East Claremont Street is a classical tenement building located in Edinburgh, designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1824 and 1830. This four-storey structure, which includes a basement and features a wallhead attic on the fourth storey, is constructed from sandstone ashlar.

The building has a base course and round-arched recesses at the ground level, with a band course that cuts through the bays at the lintel. There is another band course between the ground and first floors that meets the architraves of the windows above. The first-floor windows are architraved and corniced, with panelled aprons and pediments on the second bay and every third bay thereafter. The second floor features architraved windows with a cill band, topped by a frieze and cornice. The corniced eaves, ashlar steps, and entrance platts that overhang the basement add to the building's classical character. Notably, the cills of the first-floor windows have been lowered, which removed the aprons.

On the principal elevation, there are timber panelled doors in the entrances with round-arched radial fanlights located in bays 3, 4, 7, 10, 15, 18, 19, 22, 27, 30, 31, and 34. The remaining bays feature windows set in round-arched recesses. The windows are primarily timber sash and case with predominantly 12-pane glazing, although some have plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are stacks with terracotta cans. The property is also adorned with fleur-de-lys headed cast-iron railings. The interior was not seen in 1998.
