Description

The Masonic Lodge at 63, 65, and 67 Blackfriars Street in Edinburgh was designed by Andrew Kerr and completed in 1870. This two-storey building with an attic features four bays and showcases Scots Renaissance architectural details. It is built from bull-faced ashlar with polished dressings, particularly noticeable at the ground floor level. A moulded string course runs above the ground floor, and there is a cill course at the attic level.

The principal entrance is located on the left side and is framed by a roll-moulded architrave. Above the entrance, there is a masonic crest and an inscribed panel, which are flanked by corbelled blocks that are part of the string course. These are topped with pedestalled globes. The first floor is adorned with leaded and coloured glass windows featuring a diamond pattern. A corbelled rectangular oriel window, topped with thistle finials, projects from the crow-stepped wall-head gable, which has a wall-head stack to the left. There are also two pedimented dormer heads on the left, each displaying Masonic symbols and finials shaped like a star and moon, which break the eaves.

At the ground level, there are two-leaf panelled timber doors. The attic features timber sash and case windows with a six-pane glazing pattern. The ground floor has fixed multi-pane glazing with curvilinear timber detailing on the upper panes. The roof is covered with graded grey Scottish slate, and there is a broad end stack along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
