Description
50 Blackfriars Street in Edinburgh is a substantial four-storey and attic tenement block built between 1901 and 1902 by Archibald MacPherson. It features a near-symmetrical Scots-Baronial design with six bays. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked rough-faced rubble, accented with polished dressings. Notable architectural details include a string course above the ground floor, a stepped corbel table between the second and third floors, and overhanging eaves. The left bay of the ground floor has a wide, round-arched opening, with a two-leaf timber door at the center framed by a pilastered Renaissance-style doorpiece. The outer bays have crow-stepped gables and engaged wallhead stacks, while the center showcases an unusual arrangement of picturesque gabled dormers. The rear elevation features two levels, a canted off-centre stair turret with a parapet, and a low flat-roofed outshot. The roofline at the southern end has been altered to accommodate a lift shaft.
The building includes a variety of single, paired, and bipartite small-paned timber sash and case windows, a slate roof, end stacks, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was comprehensively refurbished in 2001 for use as a hotel and youth hostel.
