Description
42-45 Clyde Street West in Helensburgh is a mid-19th century, three-storey, five-bay tenement building that reflects the late style of David Hamilton and the early style of Alexander Thomson. The building features shops on the ground floor and is constructed of red sandstone rubble with cream ashlar on the south elevation. It has cill courses, a cornice, and architraved windows on the first floor, along with bipartite windows that have pilastered reveals and mullions.
On the south elevation facing Clyde Street, there is a central two-leaf panelled doorway, flanked by two modern shop fronts on the right and a 19th-century shop front on the left at No 45. The central doorway includes a fanlit two-leaf folding door and a half-glazed vestibule door, with large plate glass display windows on either side. There is a blind window in the centre, with flanking windows on the first and second floors. The outer bays on the first floor feature slightly advanced corniced bipartite windows, while the ones above are slightly recessed.
The building has a variety of glazing patterns, with most windows being replacements in uPVC, although some original four-pane sash and case windows remain. The roof is covered with grey slate and has rendered corniced stacks at the gables.
Inside No 45, there is a corniced and compartmented plasterwork ceiling, along with some original gaslight fittings. At the rear of the shop, there is a boarded office featuring Art Nouveau stained glass windows.
