Description
The monument to Henry Bell, located on the Esplanade at Clyde Street West in Helensburgh, was erected in 1872. It is a red sandstone obelisk that features an inscription commemorating Henry Bell as the first person in Great Britain to successfully apply steam power for navigation. The inscription notes that he was born in Linlithgow in 1766 and died in Helensburgh in 1830.
