Description

St John's School, built in 1888, is a former Episcopal primary school with later additions and alterations. The building comprises a single-story main block with an attic, a three-bay projection to the northwest, and a single-story addition from the 20th century connected to the southeast. The main block is constructed of squared and snecked tooled granite to the northwest, with bull-faced granite to the northeast and southwest. Pointed rubble is used to the southeast, with bull-faced quoins in part. Openings are framed with long and short bull-faced surrounds, granite mullions, and chamfered cills. The building features overhanging timber eaves with brackets and timber bargeboards. The southeast addition is harled. Single-story, L-plan outbuildings, formerly play sheds, are located to the northeast and southeast.

The northwest elevation, which serves as the main entrance, has six bays. A three-bay projection is set to the left. A gabled bay breaks the eaves at the centre, containing a timber panelled door with a plate glass fanlight, flanking pilasters and side-lights, and a dated panel in the gablehead; flanking small bipartite windows are present, with a gabled dormer to the right. A bipartite window is recessed to the outer left, a single window is recessed to the right, and a tripartite window is situated in the bay to the outer right.

The northeast and southwest side elevations feature the main block with a central five-light glazing row, stepped to create a tripartite upper light. A modern, flat-roofed addition connects to a recessed gabled block to the northeast. The southeast rear elevation is plain for the main block, with a projecting, single-story gabled block adjoined at the centre.

The interior includes two classrooms, one to the north and one to the south, featuring boarded timber dado panelling and false ceilings. A fireplace is present to the south, and timber panelled doors are throughout.

The playshed to the northeast is a single-story, L-plan block constructed of partially whitewashed granite rubble. It contains a store to the north and a shed with a cast-iron column support to the south, covered by a grey slate piended roof with a rooflight. The playshed to the southeast is also a single-story, L-plan, granite rubble block, with a store to the south and a partially blocked store with a cast-iron column support.

Boundary walls with arched rubble coping enclose the site and former playground, with modern railings above in places. Square-plan gatepiers with four-stage, tiered square-plan caps are positioned at the entrance, flanking a two-leaf, 20th-century iron gate. Similar granite gatepiers with tiered caps flank the pedestrian entrance to the northwest. The building is roofed with grey slate and terracotta ridging, featuring conical-capped ridge vents. A coped ridge stack rises above the entrance, and a stepped wallhead stack breaks the eaves to the side, with decorative circular cans throughout.
