Portnahaven School, Portnahaven

Portnahaven School, designed by architect William Railton of Kilmarnock, was built in 1878. It is a single-storey school with a two-storey detached schoolhouse to the south. The building is constructed of rubble with yellow ashlar dressings.

The school features three broad bays, with the central bay being advanced and gabled. It includes three closely spaced windows, with a tall central light, and is flanked by a curved porch that provides separate entrances for boys and girls in the re-entrant angle. The outer bays have single windows, and the building has straight skews and end stacks.

The schoolhouse also has three bays, with a door located in a central projecting gabled porch and a narrow window above it. Like the school, it has straight skews and end stacks. Most of the original lying-pane glazing remains intact, and both buildings have slated roofs.
