Description

Dhuhill House is a large, asymmetrical villa built in 1847, constructed in a Franco-Italianate style. The house is primarily built from red and grey stugged, snecked sandstone rubble, with the south elevation squarately-faced and featuring rock-faced dressings. The stonework includes cills, lintels, and string courses, with rusticated window margins, a cornice, and long and short quoins.

The south (entrance) elevation features a recessed central bay leading to a single-story arcaded porch with a depressed arch at the center, flanked by round arches supported by square, rusticated columns with simple moulded capitals and voussoirs. A lean-to roof covers the porch. A panelled door, with a half-glazed vestibule door, is set within the arch, flanked by windows with etched glazing. Three closely-spaced windows are above at the first floor. A semi-circular gabled dormer sits above with two round-arched lights. To the outer right is an advanced bay with a deep, full-height bow containing three windows at ground and first floor, including a round-arched window at the center of the first floor, topped with a round-arched cornice. The bay has a piended roof. A taller, advanced block to the outer left has a steeply pitched roof and bracketed cornice. It includes an advanced, squared tripartite window at ground and first floor, a lean-to slate roof, a dentilled cornice, and a narrow tripartite window above. A single gabled dormer with a pointed-arch light is positioned in the attic.

The west elevation shows the return of the taller block with windows at ground and first floor, and three closely-spaced windows to the second floor. A slightly recessed blank bay to the left is coupled with a gabled return featuring an apex stack to the north, with a small window at the first floor and a window to the second floor.

The north (rear) elevation has a long stair window with seven panels and Art Nouveau stained glass at the centre, with windows disposed asymmetrically on either side and on the return to the right.

The east elevation features a single-story wing with a piended roof and two windows at the first floor. A conservatory abuts to the left. The conservatory is semi-circular in plan with a sandstone plinth, a doorway to the south, four-pane curved glazing, and a rectangular lantern.

Most windows are plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is primarily grey slate, with dormers noted on the south side and flat-roofed, slate-hung twin dormers to the north and a dormer to the east. Rendered, corniced end stacks are on the east side, with a rubble apex stack to the north.

The interior includes ecaustic tiles in the porch, a pine and rosewood inlay floor in the hall, corniced ceilings, a timber balustraded stair, and a gothic screen to the stair window. A first-floor drawing room has a deep chamfered angle to the bay window. Timber chimneypieces are also present.

The property is enclosed by rubble boundary walls with square-plan piers, coped with ball finials, and timber gates.
