Description
West Burn is a villa built around 1855, featuring two storeys and three symmetrical bays. The exterior is made of stugged, snecked pink and cream sandstone rubble, with the south elevation squared and coursed, and cream ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a base, cill and eaves courses, a cornice, a blocking course, and quoin-strips.
On the south (entrance) elevation, there is a central tripartite pilastered doorcase with an entablature and blocking course, leading to two-leaf panelled doors flanked by narrow windows, and a deep-set vestibule door. Above, there is a window on the first floor. To the outer right, a slightly advanced full-height tripartite window is present, and to the outer left, there is a similarly detailed bay with canted windows at the ground level (1-2-1) and a parapet.
The east (side) elevation features a canted window in the centre and a tripartite window above. There is a single-storey wing to the north with three bays to the east, which includes a central door flanked by windows. The north (rear) elevation has a single-storey wing to the outer right and a modern conservatory to the left, with two widely spaced windows on the first floor. The west (side) elevation has a window to the right at ground level, a modern conservatory to the left, and two widely spaced windows on the first floor.
The villa mostly has plate glass sash and case windows and is topped with a grey slate roof, featuring rendered, corniced end stacks.
Inside, there is a spacious hall with a timber stair and iron balustrade. The dining room to the right of the hall has a black marble chimneypiece, while the drawing room to the left features early 20th-century wainscot.
