Description
14 Millig Street, Helensburgh is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical villa dating from 1856, with additions to the northwest in the early 20th century. The villa exhibits classical detailing. The exterior is constructed of stugged, snecked cream sandstone, with ashlar facing the south elevation and ashlar dressings. Base, cill, and lintel courses are present, along with ovolo moulded arrises to the south-facing windows, and bracketted eaves.
The south elevation, which serves as the main entrance, features a fine classical porch at the centre. This porch has round-headed arches set within ashlar piers, strapwork carving to the entablature, and a pierced stone parapet. A semi-circular arched doorpiece has cavetto-chamfered reveals, a two-leaf panelled door, and a half-glazed vestibule door. A window is positioned above the doorpiece on the first floor. A window on the ground floor to the right is set within an ashlar panel, incorporating a paired consoled cornice supporting a pierced stone window guard above the upper window. Paired pilasters flank the first-floor window, with ashlar consoles above the pilasters supporting advanced bracketted eaves. A slightly advanced bay to the outer left contains a full-height canted window at the northwest angle, and a tripartite window facing south.
The west-facing side elevation has three windows at both ground and first floor levels, along with an addition to the northwest angle featuring a tripartite window facing south. The east-facing side elevation has a two-leaf panelled, fanlit door at the centre (serving as the entrance to No 43), with windows to the right and left. There are three windows on the first floor. A two-storey service wing is situated to the outer right.
The service wing exhibits raised margins to the windows with stop-chamfered arrises. Its east elevation features a small window at the centre, flanked by ground-floor windows, and semi-circular arched windows at the centre of the first floor, breaking the eaves to the right and left. A taller bay is positioned to the outer right, incorporating a bipartite window at ground level, and a window breaking the eaves above with a gabled dormerhead. The north return is blank, while a single-storey lean-to projection is present on the return to the right, with a doorway (serving as the entrance to No 45) facing north.
The north (rear) elevation features a semi-circular arched stair window at the centre of the first floor, which is partially blocked. A later single-storey wing abuts to the right. The windows throughout the villa predominantly feature plate glass sash and case windows, exhibiting a variety of glazing patterns on the south elevation. The roof is piended with grey slate, and there is a corniced end stack with original cans to the left.
The interior of the property has not been inspected.
Surrounding the property are low, rendered boundary walls to Millig Street, with a semi-circular coped top, and rendered, painted piers with chamfered angles and corniced caps. Decorative iron gates are present, alongside a rubble boundary wall to Campbell Street with a semi-circular coped top.
