Description
Braeriach is an asymmetrical, two-storey Arts and Crafts villa with a lower service wing, built in 1909 for Robert Wemyss. The house is constructed of stugged, snecked and rake-joined red sandstone rubble, with a harled service wing and ashlar dressings at the first floor. The windows are mostly timber mullioned, some with hoodmoulds, and feature a slight overhang at the first floor. Deep, overhanging swept eaves are also present.
The north (entrance) elevation has a doorway to the outer right, featuring a timber vertical-panelled door and a carved ashlar panel above, dated 1909. There's a glazed vestibule door. A tripartite window is to the left of the entrance, with a small bipartite window above at the first floor. The western (side) elevation shows a gabled return of the service wing, with a harled panel at ground level and flanking windows. A bipartite window is at the first floor to the left, and a shallow canted oriel to the right.
The south (garden) elevation incorporates a lean-to conservatory at ground level, a tripartite window breaking the eaves above with a semi-circular headed light at centre, and a shallow gable. A full-height canted four-light window also breaks the eaves to the outer left, incorporating smaller windows to the returns at the first floor, topped by a coped parapet with a semi-circular gablet. Further right is an ashlar mullioned tripartite window at ground level, with an ashlar and harled oriel above, featuring lights arranged 1-3-1, and a coped parapet with a gablet at the centre.
The east (side) elevation, a gabled return to the service wing, includes a doorway and a lean-to greenhouse, with a window to the right. A window is to the outer left at the first floor, and a bipartite window to the outer right.
The north wing is two storeys and has an attic. The west elevation of this wing displays four asymmetrically disposed ground floor windows, including an oculus to the outer left. A four-light timber mullioned window breaks the eaves to the right at the first floor, with a slate-hung dormer to the left, featuring a semi-circular gablet, and a narrow five-light dormer to the right, also with a gablet. The east elevation of the north wing has a timber mullioned and transomed window to the left at ground level, a window to the right, and tripartite windows at ground and first floor, with a window to the right.
The property has mostly multi-pane casement windows and a grey/green slate roof with red ridge tiles. The end stacks are harled and coped, and there is a rooflight to the east.
The boundary walls are constructed of red sandstone rubble. Square gatepiers have ashlar corniced caps, and fine Art Nouveau wrought-iron gates complete the setting.
