Description

Markland is an early 19th century single-storey, three-bay romantic classical villa located on Killerran Road in Campbeltown. The building has a rectangular plan and features a modern porch at the center of the principal front, along with a small addition projecting at the rear. The walls are constructed from random rubble, with droved ashlar raised margins around the windows and at the corners. The villa has an eaves course and projecting cills at the windows.

The northeast (principal) front is symmetrical, featuring a modern porch with a brick base and a glazed timber upper section. Within the porch is a pilastered doorpiece that holds a two-panel inner vestibule door, which has two glazed round-arched upper panels and a nine-pane fanlight above.

The northwest and southwest (side) elevations are also symmetrical, each having a single window at the center. The southwest (rear) elevation includes a corrugated-iron and brick addition at the center, flanked by windows.

The villa has timber sash and case windows at the front and rear, with six-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes, while the side elevations have four-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended shape, featuring overhanging corniced timber eaves, along with cast-iron gutters and downpipes. There are three single-flue wallhead stacks piercing the eaves on the northwest elevation, each with bases, stop-chamfered shafts, crenellated copes, and cans. A matching single-flue wallhead stack is located to the right of the southeast elevation.

The property is enclosed by boundary walls, which include a random rubble retaining wall with a saddleback cope along Kilkerran Road. There are also random rubble walls with rough copes on the southwest and southeast sides. A wrought-iron gate is positioned at the left corner of the principal front.
