Description
North Quay, located at Keills Port, was probably built in the second half of the 18th century and was extended or widened, possibly in more than one phase, around 1800. It underwent repairs in 1812. The quay is a long structure that extends north from the west side of a narrow harbour inlet, with the north end slightly returning towards the west. It is constructed entirely of rubble, with the original section featuring flat coping slabs and a wide flight of steps at the north end of the east face. The top course at the north end and the west face is set vertically, while the west face slopes steeply inwards from the sea bed, with the other faces being vertical. At the north end, there is a single stone bollard, and although there are iron runner ties at the edges, these are not original. The quay also has some wrought-iron tying rings. The quay continues to the south, supporting a roadway.
