Description
Seymour Lodge is a two-storey, two-bay gabled cottage ornée villa designed by Alexander Thomson and built in 1850. It is accompanied by a single-storey block to the outer left and a porch to the outer right. The main fabric is harled and painted, with ashlar margins and dressings, including hoodmoulds. The rear and side elevations are in whinstone. The building features a deep base course, timber mullions and transoms, slightly advanced eaves, and exposed rafters.
The north-west (main) elevation has a prominent, broad gabled block to the left, featuring a square, projecting corniced window at ground level, flanked by two windows with leaded upper panes and a decorative cast-iron balustrade. A broad, three-centred arched window, also with timber mullions and transoms, is situated centrally. The wall is raised to a blank gable on the left return. To the right, a lower block has a large five-light window occupying the centre and right side, with leaded upper panes, and a narrow window to the inner left. A gabled dormer with a half-lozenge window is positioned to the right of the centre. A half-piend-roofed porch is recessed to the outer right, with a shoulder-arched panelled door, a four-pane glazed vestibule door, and a quadriparite long window on the right return. A bipartite window is in the gablehead on the right return, with the window to the left being blind. A single-storey kitchen block extends to the outer left, with four small windows on the main elevation and a blank gable.
The south-east elevation presents a broad gable to the outer right, with a window in the gablehead (four panes over two panes), a door and window at ground level, and a bipartite window to the outer left. A rooflight is present, and a lean-to corrugated-iron shelter partially obscures the ground floor.
The windows are fitted with plate glass with leaded upper panes. The roof is covered in grey slate, with alternating plain and fish-scale tiled panels, and features cast-iron trefoil cresting. A low pedestal stack with grouped octagonal cans sits alongside a taller rendered and coped ridge stack.
The interior includes a panelled wooden dado, barley-sugar balustrade, ornate plasterwork featuring acanthus leaf motifs, and stained glass upper panes. The upper drawing room is distinguished by a polygonal, compartmentalised plaster ceiling, floral bosses, a bead and rinceau cornice, and slender colonnettes between windows.
A single-storey, rectangular-plan gig-house, built in the same style, is located to the east of the main house. It features a narrow gable to the outer right with a boarded door, a pointed arch window in the gablehead, and a six-pane fixed window to the left.
The boundary wall is constructed of whinstone with harl pointing and boulder coping. Square piers have stop-chamfered arrises, pyramidal caps, and a ball finial on a plinth. Wooden latticed gates complete the enclosure.
