Description

Ashlea is a mid-19th century, two-storey, five-bay semi-detached double villa located on Shore Road in Cove and Kilcreggan. The building features a symmetrical rectangular plan with gabled roofs and is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with rubble in the central bays and polished stone margins and dressings. Notable architectural elements include a base course, string course, projecting eaves, and exposed rafters.

The west elevation showcases tall gables that are advanced to the outer right and left, with full-height canted bays and a half-helm roof. At ground level, there is a lean-to, veranda-type porch that connects the gables, featuring shoulder arch doors for each house on the outer right and left, along with flush-panelled bipartite fanlights. The first floor has rubble stonework, with long masonry six-light windows on the outer sides and a narrow single light window in the center.

The north and south elevations are finished in painted rubble, with a broad gable and a bipartite window at ground level, although the left window is blind. A Gothic window is present at the first floor, with blank bays on the outer right and left, and a panel recessed where the string course turns the corner.

The villa has four-pane and plate glass timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead flashings, and broad low sandstone ridge stacks topped with large circular corniced cans.

The interior was not seen in 1992. The property includes decorative cast-iron gates at Ellerslie, while the gates at Ashlea have been replaced with a plainer variety. The gatepiers feature stop-chamfered arrises, pyramidal caps, and ball and spike finials, although the finials are missing at Ashlea.
