Description
1-5 Marine Court is a former hotel built in the mid to late 19th century, now converted into separate flats. It is a near-symmetrical, two-storey building with an attic and three bays, located at the end of a terrace. The entrance is recessed to the outer right for Nos 1-5, with an additional entrance at the rear for Nos 7-8. The building features squared and snecked stugged red sandstone with raised, polished dressings, a raised base course, and corniced eaves. The ground floor windows have corniced, consoled surrounds, projecting cills, and stone mullions for the bipartite windows. The central bay has corniced, canted windows, while the attic windows are round-arched and set in a Mansard roof.
On the entrance elevation, there is a replacement timber panelled door in the outer left bay (No 6) with a plate-glass fanlight above. The surrounding doorpiece includes a consoled cornice, a round-arched pediment, and a decorative cast-iron porch with foliate detailing, supported by barley-sugar Corinthian columns on low coped flanking walls. The bay to the right of the entrance has bipartite windows on both floors, while the penultimate bay to the outer right features three-light canted windows on both floors. The outer right bay also has bipartite windows on both floors, and there are five attic windows evenly spaced. A replacement door is centered in a flat-roofed bay recessed to the right.
The building predominantly has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, with 6- and 8-pane windows in the canted sections. The graded grey slate Mansard roof has raised stone skews, cast-iron brattishing, and a coursed sandstone apex stack to the north with octagonal cans.
The boundary wall consists of a low coped red sandstone wall along Argyle Street, with square-plan gatepiers flanking the entrances on either side, topped with pyramidal caps, and decorative foliate cast-iron railings.
