Description

48 Shore Street in Campbeltown is a tenement building dating from the early to later 19th century. It is three storeys tall with an attic and has a near symmetrical four-bay square plan, featuring a circular stair tower that projects at the rear. The ground and first floors of the main facade are constructed with droved rubble walls, while the upper part is finished with droved ashlar. The rear and blank side elevations are made of droved ashlar dressing and roughcast. There is a base course and a cill course at the first floor level.

On the northwest elevation facing Shore Street, there is an entrance to a plastered pend at the ground floor bay on the outer left, with a similar opening that has been infilled by a window. The facade features ashlar three-light, two-storey canted oriels that are corbelled out at the second floor.

The rear elevation includes an eaves course and the circular projecting stair tower on the outer left, which contains a stone spiral stair.

The principal front has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows at the ground and first floors, and 4-pane windows on the upper floors. The rear elevation has 6-pane windows, along with multi-pane fixed lights at the stair tower. The building features six-panel entrance doors leading to the stair tower and the lower flat. The roof is covered with grey slate and has piended dormers topped with lead ball finials, while the tower has a conical shape with a lead ball finial. The principal front also has profiled cast-iron downpipes and gutters. The gables are topped with yellow brick coped multi-flue apex stacks, which have circular cans, and the northwest stack is roughcast.

Additionally, there is a random rubble boundary wall that encloses the yard at the rear of the property.
