Description

This building at 45-46 Crichton Road in Rothesay, Bute, dates from the late 19th century and is a symmetrical two-storey structure with an attic, consisting of a five-bay gabled block divided into three houses. There is a single-storey lean-to addition that is recessed to the outer right, which serves as the entrance for No 45, and a pitched single-storey wing that is recessed to the outer left for No 47. The building is primarily constructed of coursed yellow sandstone, with red sandstone ashlar dressings. It features a raised base and string courses, corbelled eaves on the projecting central bay, corbelled canopies above the flanking single windows, and scalloped gableheads on the outer left and right. The structure has raised red ashlar quoins, long and short surrounds to chamfered openings, architraved red ashlar mullions, and chamfered cills. The sides and rear are finished in random rubble sandstone.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there are tripartite windows on both floors in the advanced central bay, with a tripartite attic window centered in the boarded timber gable above. The ground floor features two-leaf timber panelled doors in the penultimate bays to the outer right (No 46) and left (No 47), both with decorative fanlights and architraved surrounds. The first floor has single windows, with quadripartite box-dormers aligned above. The outer left and right bays contain four-light canted windows on both floors, with bipartite attic windows centered in the swept gables. There is a replacement door at ground level in the recessed lean-to addition for No 45, flanked by single windows, and a single window centered in the pitched wing for No 47.

The windows are predominantly decorative stained-glass at the upper level, with plate-glass at the lower level, and include timber casements. The dormers are set in gables with two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are corniced sandstone apex stacks to the east and west, along with various circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996.

The boundary wall consists of a low coped wall along Crichton Road, which is part-rendered to the right and whitewashed to the left. Square-plan sandstone piers flank the entrances, with the piers for No 47 being whitewashed. These piers feature a raised base course, moulded detailing, and pyramidal caps.
