Description
Smithy House in Balkello dates from around 1800, with a mid-19th century wing added to the south. It is a single-storey U-plan cottage and smithy constructed from rubble masonry, featuring stone, a slate roof, and a corrugated sheet metal roof. The building has end stacks and various glazing patterns.
On the east elevation, there are lean-to additions at the center that conceal a two-leaf timber door leading to the smithy on the right. This elevation also includes two rooflights and a coped gable stack on the right, complete with thackstanes. The lower wing projects to the right and has an off-centre door at the gable end, topped with a corrugated sheet metal roof. The wing on the left is advanced and features a sash and case window on the right, a window on the right return, and a small attic window.
The south elevation has three bays, with a door at the center that leads to a dilapidated glazed porch and flanking windows. This side has a slate roof and a harled gablehead.
Inside, there is a forge located at the north end of the circa 1800 wing.
