Description

This is a circa 1800 farmhouse, expanded over time through the addition of a wing in the early 19th century to the north and another in the early 20th century to the south, creating a "T" shaped plan. The farmhouse is constructed of harled rubble with ashlar margins, and has a slate roof. The windows are sash and case windows, some with 2, 4, or 12 panes, with some temporarily blocked at ground floor level. The roof features ashlar coped skewputs and coped harled stacks.

The south elevation is three bays wide, featuring two bays of the original house on the left, and a single-story entrance porch addition projecting to the right. There is a ground floor window on the left, two windows on the first floor, and a gablehead stack to the left return. A projecting drawing room wing extends from the right side, incorporating full-height canted windows and a wrought-iron finial at the gable.

The west elevation shows the gable end of the original house projecting at the right. A dilapidated lean-to glasshouse is present to the right, and a stair window at the left return has been partially blocked by the northern addition. A three-bay service/bedroom wing is located on the left, with two doors at ground floor and three windows on the first floor, one bordered with stained glass. A single-story lean-to is attached to the left return elevation.

The east elevation is asymmetrical, with the gable of the original house set off-centre to the left, featuring two windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor, plus a gablehead stack. A wing to the left is blind and has a wallhead stack, while a wing to the right has three ground floor windows, two first floor windows, a further wallhead stack, a ridge stack, and a gablehead stack at the far right.

The interior features an entrance porch with a coloured encaustic tiled floor, and a drawing room with panelled reveals to the canted window. There are two open presses with moulded architraves and curved ornaments on the corners, along with a decorative cornice – although the chimneypiece has been removed. Two other ground floor rooms have plain moulded cornices. The kitchen has a flagstone floor, ceiling hooks, a hooded stone chimneypiece, a larder with stone slabs, shelves, and a meat safe. A winding stone stair has plain wrought-iron balusters and a round-headed door with stained and etched glass leading to the northern wing. At the first floor are three cast-iron horseshoe grates, along with some original shutters and decorative bathroom fittings.

A formal walled garden is enclosed by rubble garden walls on the north, south, east, and west. Box hedging defines the eastern edge, and rough-hewn rubble gatepiers stand at the west side of the house.
