Description

3 George Street, 1, 1A in Montrose is a classical tenement building dating from 1792. It is a two-storey, five-bay structure located on a curved corner site with an asymmetrical plan. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are squared and snecked. The building features a base course, a cill band course, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, along with tall windows that have chamfered margins.

On the southwest elevation, the central entrance has a pilastered doorpiece with a deep entablature and a modern shop door. Above this, there is a window centered on the first floor. The two bays on either side are symmetrical, each with a window on both the ground and first floors, while the outer bay to the right has a door on the ground floor.

The southeast elevation is the narrow end of the block, featuring a window on both the ground and first floors, offset to the left. The east elevation also has a window on both floors, similarly offset to the left. The building is adjacent to No. 5 George Street to the northeast and 153 High Street to the north.

The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is an ashlar ridge stack to the south and a brick stack to the north. Inside, the ground floor boasts deep geometrical pattern plaster ceiling mouldings and a floreate cornice, while the first floor contains apartments.
