Description
7 George Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey house with an attic and a three-bay rectangular plan. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with a harled finish on the front and one side, featuring plain margins.
The west elevation is narrow, with No 5 adjoining on the left and No 9 on the right. It has a round-arch doorway with a plain fanlight offset to the left, and a window to the right at both the ground and first floors.
The south elevation, which adjoins No 9, features a blocked window in the re-entrant angle to the right.
The north elevation is the gable end, with a window at the ground and first floors offset to the right.
The east elevation includes a modern window extension at the ground floor to the right, a brick piended addition with a door and window to the left, and two symmetrical windows at the first floor. Above these are canted piended dormers, and a large central ashlar nepus gable with a capped stack at the center. The dormer extends to the entrance front and includes a large skylight.
The entrance front has 4-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear features modern replacements. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are stone skews and brick stacks at the gablehead and party wall with No 5.
Inside, there is a spiral staircase with a cast-iron bannister against the west wall, and ceiling roses in the principal room on the ground floor and in the southeast room on the first floor.
The property is surrounded by varied boundary walls to the garden on the east side.
