Description
Balmuirfield House is a later 19th century, two-storey L-plan house with extensions from 1903 attributed to James Findlay. The building features snecked rubble and harl on the sides and rear, with stugged coursers at the front, and is harled at the first floor. It has an ashlar margin and a piended and gabled slate roof. The windows are a mix of single and paired styles, with painted canted windows at the front, sash and case frames with plate glass at the bottom, and a variety of glazing patterns at the top. The house also has flat-coped skews, wallhead and shaped gables, and moulded cast-iron gutters at the front and sides, along with ridge and end stacks.
The south elevation is symmetrical with five bays. The original three bays are on the right, featuring French doors (the original front door) at the center with an astragalled fanlight and droved margins, flanked by canted windows with multi-paned glazing at the top of the top sashes and moulded cornices. To the right, there is a flat-roofed canted window on the first floor with 4-and 8-pane glazing at the top sashes and a shaped gable above. A large multi-pane window is on the left, with a smaller shaped gable above. The later two bays on the left include a panelled and glazed door with a fanlight and droved margins, and a full-height canted window with a shaped gable, similar to the outer right, but with 4-and 8-pane glazing.
The east elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a gable at the center with two windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor. There is a bay on the left with a wallhead stack and a window at the far left with multi-pane glazing at the top of the top sash. The bay on the right has a door and two windows on the ground floor, with part of the first floor raised and harled to full height, and a window on the left.
The north elevation has a bay on the left that is raised and harled at the first floor, with a door and various windows, and an oriel at the top right. There is a later single-storey dry-dashed, flat-roofed addition on the right, and a cheese press incised with 'JO' at the far right.
The interior is in original condition throughout, including the chimneypieces, kitchen, bathroom, and pantry ceramics. The multi-pane top sash glazing in the dining and drawing rooms features stained glass depicting foliage, flowers, birds, fish, and portrait heads.
