Description
Ladysbridge Hospital in Banff, designed by Alexander Reid of A and W Reid, was built between 1864 and 1865, with the date of 1864 marked on the building. It is a long structure, primarily two stories high, facing south and consisting of 21 gabled bays. The exterior is made of dark Rhynie stone, accented with contrasting tooled sandstone ashlar dressings.
The central part of the building is an advanced gabled range that features three bays and stands over a raised basement. This section is illuminated by three large windows on each floor, which have transoms and mullions. The wallhead is coped, and the outer bays have gablets with blind slits, while the center includes a datestone.
On either side of the central range, there are long two-story wings, each with two advanced gabled sections. These wings have ground floor windows and segmental-headed tripartite windows on the first floor, with multi-pane glazing throughout, some of which include horizontal panes. The building has tall coped ridge and end stacks, and at the eastern and western ends, there are ridge crossings that once supported a spire, now demolished. The roofs are covered with slate.
