Description

This building is a late 19th century shop and cottage located in Deeside. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure with a regular and symmetrical rectangular plan, featuring a typical design for the area. The cottage has an adjoining timber-built shop on the north side and a millhouse at the rear that contains original threshing machinery. The exterior is harled with squared red granite rubble, showcasing projecting long and short quoins and margins around the openings. There is a lean-to outhouse at the back, and the west-facing facade has a regular arrangement of windows with a door in the center.

The interior was not seen during the 2002 survey, as the building was unoccupied and boarded up at that time.

The shop premises are a single-storey, single-bay addition to the roadside gable end of the cottage. It is constructed of timber boards painted red, with plain barge boarding under the overhanging eaves, and the gable ends in a wooden spur finial. The shop features casement windows, a grey slate roof with lead flashing, and an interior that includes timber panelling on the walls, fitted shelving, and a shop counter made of deeply polished pine.

The millhouse is also a single-storey, single-bay addition at the rear of the cottage, aligned with the mill lade. It is built of plain rubble with a slated roof. Inside, it houses a large, timber-built, water-powered threshing machine dating from around 1900 to 1910, showcasing the high craftsmanship of the local country joiner from the pre-war period. Timber steps lead to a mezzanine storage space.
