1 West Street, Johnshaven

This is a circa 1830 two-story, three-bay house located in Johnshaven. The house is set on a slope, with the main entrance situated on the first floor facing north. It is built of red sandstone ashlar with rusticated quoins and a decorative band course separating the ground and first floors; the rear is of rubble construction. There is a blocked door in a recessed ground floor area at the north side. Steps oversail a small area in front of the main entrance, which features a two-leaf door with a geometric fanlight. To the north, cast-iron railings enclose a basement area. A rear entrance is positioned slightly off-centre. The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the north side, while other windows have non-traditional glazing. The roof is slate, with brick end stacks.

A ruinous, single-story, three-bay cottage stands to the south; it dates to circa 1800 and is built of rubble, partially harled.

The house is a good example of a traditional design, close to the sea, and contributes significantly to the streetscape of the village. The north elevation, with its central glazed timber door, flanking windows, and oversailing steps, is a particularly notable feature. The ruinous cottage in the garden adds to the house's interest and likely predates it. The statutory address is 1 West Street, Johnshaven, with the detached cottage to the rear.
