Description
The Glendronach Distillery, established in 1826 and subsequently expanded, comprises a whisky distillery with a traditional kiln range, bonded warehouses, maltings, a steading (now converted to offices and a warehouse), and a former manager's house.
The kiln range is a square structure raised on squared rubble at its second stage, constructed from rubble and harl, with small-pane glazing and louvred openings. The entrance elevation features the kiln on the right side, with two small windows close to the eaves of the slated roof and a wide, low ventilator. To the left is a recessed nine-bay granary range, featuring a ground-floor door, regular fenestration, and small hayloft openings to the first floor, except for the penultimate bay to the left, which has a forestair leading to a timber door. A harled gabled range adjoins the kiln to the right.
The former steading is a seven-bay structure characterised by round-headed cart-arches with keystones and voussoirs, a raised central gable, and lower flanking ranges built from large squared rubble blocks with dressed margins.
The principal (north) elevation is symmetrical, with a tall centre bay containing a large cart arch below a stone tablet and a glazed oculus in the gablehead. Three arches flank the central bay, all now infilled.
The south elevation presents an irregular pattern of fenestration, with a tall M-gable flanked by lower gables.
The bonded warehouses consist of a large south range, with six gabled bays to the east and west, harled in appearance, with grilled windows in each gable and a door to the southwest gable. Arrowslit ventilation is present in the gableheads, and the roof is tarred. A west range, situated to the south of the steading, is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, two storeys high, with three gabled bays, sited on rising ground. Arrowslit ventilators are incorporated into both floors, along with doors on the north gabled elevation, and irregularly placed fenestration. Stone coped skews and grey slates are present, with grilles covering the windows.
Adjacent to the stills, the offices are a single-storey rubble structure with a near-square plan, three gabled bays to the east and west. A segmental-arched pend, now serving as a door, and windows with cement surrounds are visible on the west side, alongside a door and window on the north side. Modern four-pane glazing is found on the office windows, with a grille on a workshop window. Stone-coped skews and grey slates adorn the structure.
Dronach House, dating from the earlier 19th century, is a two-storey and attic, three-bay, rectangular-plan manager's house. It is constructed from roughly coursed rubble with large quoins and stone margins. The principal (south) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a pitched roof porch in the centre bay at ground level, windows in the flanking bays, and regular fenestration to the first floor. A slated dormer window is positioned over the centre bay. The north elevation has a central bay containing a modern timber door with a plate glass fanlight and flanking lights, windows in the flanking bays, and regular fenestration to the first floor, with a small modern rooflight centered above. Twelve-pane glazing is typical in the timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks are present, featuring a full complement of cans and thackstanes.
