Description
Dess House is a building of considerable merit, dating from 1851 and designed by Thomas Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Matthews. It represents a fragment of a larger baronial mansion house, with the main portion being demolished in 1956. The building is three storeys high with dormer windows at the second-floor level, and incorporates a four-storey crenellated tower and a two-storey wing containing dormer windows at the first-floor level, along with an angle turret. The walls are harled, with granite dressings. A west-facing loggia, constructed from bullfaced granite, was added in the 1890s based on designs by W R Davidson of Dess, who was practising in London at the time. Group value is present.
