Description
Bourtie Parish Church, built in 1806, features a simple near-square plan constructed of boulder rubble and topped with a tall piend roof that has a short ridge. A small gablet with a bellcote and a ball finial is located on the west wall. The south wall has two large Gothic windows with original basket tracery sashes, while the north wall contains two Gothic doorways.
Inside, the church is wood-lined with a cove ceiling and includes a horseshoe gallery supported by square wooden columns that are reeded at the front. Notable original features include a well-crafted ogee-canopied pulpit, a precentor's box, and other original fittings, along with original door furniture. The church houses a bell from 1760 by John Mowat, a fragment of sculptured stone, a panel dated 1669, a ladle from 1671, and two badly damaged medieval effigies. There have been some minor alterations and repairs made in 1934.
