Description
Midmar Castle is a Z-plan building designed by master mason George Bell around 1570-1575. The main part of the castle is approximately square and consists of four storeys, featuring a six-storey circular battlemented tower and a four-storey turreted square tower with an attic. The northwest wing is two storeys high with dormer heads, likely dating from the 17th century. The east wing is two to three storeys, probably constructed around 1733, with a small bathroom addition that may date to around 1796. The exterior is harled, and there is a small raised terrace in the courtyard.
Inside, the first floor is plain with an original ceiling and a good early 19th-century cast iron stove by Adam Anderson. The original late 18th-century bathroom arrangements are also present. The second and third floors contain well-preserved original panelled rooms with original plasterwork. The east wing features good panelling from around 1733, with late 18th-century additions. The elegant dining room on the ground floor, likely from around 1796, is decorated in Pompeian red and has windows set in semi-elliptically arched recesses. The castle underwent considerable repairs in 1840.
