Description
The stables at Pitmachie Farm, originally part of the farmhouse that served as an inn, date from around 1710. This two-storey building features three windows and a central door, constructed from squared granite with skewputts and coped chimneys. Attached to the west is a single-storey annexe with a piended roof, built around 1806, also made of squared granite. The annexe has one window and door to the south and two windows to the west. The door includes a well-preserved asuragal fanlight. Both buildings are believed to have "cherry-cock" pointed features, some of which remain on the west wall of the annexe. There is a single-storey rear wing attached to the main part.
The stables are located to the east of the farmhouse. They are tall, consisting of two storeys and a loft, built from granite rubble with brush-pointed dressed margins and skewputts. The stables have a slated-roof lean-to on the north gable and a slated-roof lean-to coach house on the east wall, designed for three coaches. The original entry was on the east side, but this was later walled up, and a new entry was created on the south gable for farm use. The stables were originally designed to accommodate fourteen horses, with a chaumer above, but the upper floor has since been removed, along with the hay loft floor.
