Description
The Boundary Wall and Gatepiers at East Lodge in Westhall is a single-storey L-plan gatelodge built in the later 19th century, reflecting the picturesque lodge and cottage designs popular in London during the 1840s. The structure is made of white granite ashlar, featuring a stugged finish with a polished band-course. It has a steeply sloped slated jerkin roof, adorned with narrow gablets that have timber finials at the peaks. The roof breaks over the entrance in a splayed re-entrant angle and over a window to the left in a canted end bay. The eaves are supported by timber brackets, and the front corners have chamfered angles that are corbelled to a square shape above.
The lodge includes segmental-arched openings, with a raised segmental hood-mould above a bipartite window facing the road. There are tall, square-plan ashlar wallhead stacks. Unfortunately, the glazing pattern and door have been altered, and modern skylights have been added. Accompanying the lodge are a pair of simple short ashlar gatepiers and a boundary wall.
