Description
The windmill at Hilton Farm dates to either 1787 or 1825. It is constructed with an octagonal lower section, 30 feet high and 6 feet wide, tapering to 5 feet 3 inches. The lower section is built of rubble with margins and slate slab roofing. Granite corbel spurs project at the angles, supporting a walkway. The upper 20 feet of the windmill are circular, also built of tapered rubble. An original spiral staircase gave access to what were originally four floors. The sails were lost in 1879, and the remaining machinery was removed in 1956. Further details can be found in Donnachie & Stewart's publication in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 1964-6, page 292.
