Description
36 High Street in Stonehaven is a later 19th-century, two-storey and attic, four-bay Scots style terraced tenement that has been altered at the ground level. The second-floor windows extend above the eaves into dormer heads, and there is a corbelled chimney breast. The ground floor shop openings have been modified for domestic use. The building features stugged, squared, and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, and a moulded cill band at the first floor. The gables are crowstepped.
On the southwest (principal) elevation, the ground floor consists of eight bays, including a modern timber door with a plate glass fanlight located to the left of centre, two windows to the left of that, and a pedestrian pend opening (Steele's Close) with a timber gate at the far left. There are four irregularly spaced windows to the right, which were formerly shopfront openings. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with a blind panel high up at the centre of the corbelled chimney breast that pierces the gablehead. The outer bays feature pedimented gablets.
The windows are a mix of four-pane and plate glass patterns in various types of timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slates and has a stone ridge. The building includes coped squared rubble stacks with thackstanes and cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts and beak skewputts at the dormer heads.
