Description

The Stothert Memorial Church, dated 1870, was built by William Henderson & Son and stands prominently on raised ground overlooking the village of Lumphanan. It is a plain, rectangular, Gothic-plan church with a striking granite tower and spire. The church is harled with rough coursed ashlar granite around the tower, which has ashlar reveals. It features a mutuled eaves cornice to the tower and 2-stage diagonal buttresses. The entrance has a hoodmould with label stops, and leaded diamond-pane windows are found throughout, with traceried designs to the tower and margined glass to the nave. The tower includes a clock face within a diamond-aligned moulded panel, and the spire has lucarnes.

The south elevation includes an entrance tower with a broad boarded timber door, leading to a 2-light traceried window and the clock. There are further similar windows to each return of the tower, and a finialled spire. The north elevation has a broad 4-light traceried window with coloured fleur-de-lis in each diamond, while the east elevation presents four nave windows and a small gabled projection at the outer right.

Throughout the church, leaded diamond-pane windows are consistent; those to the tower and north gable are traceried, and those to the nave have coloured margins. The roof is covered with grey slates. Other detailing includes ashlar-copes, skewes, and skewputts, alongside cast iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and decorative ironwork ventilator grilles.

The interior is simple and largely unaltered, featuring fixed timber centre pews and a kingpost-type roof supported by decorative corbels and boarded timber dadoes. A carved pulpit sits on a raised platform with decorative ironwork balusters, and a small gallery at the south end is accessed by a steep, narrow stair. Paired classical memorial tablets honour Reverend Thomas Stothert, who died in 1893, and his wife, Helen Lundin Brown, who died in 1880.

The building is no longer in use as a place of worship. It is situated within rubble enclosure walls that surround a terraced graveyard containing 19th and 20th century gravestones. The church's striking granite tower with its high-quality stone spire is a significant feature. Adjacent to the main entrance is an early medieval font, described by Geddes as a "rough boulder bowl 3m in circumference" originally moved from the old parish church.

William and James Henderson operated a brief partnership based in Aberdeen, which dissolved following the Disruption of 1843. They subsequently designed buildings for the newly formed Free Church, and William Henderson was responsible for approximately one hundred churches and manses. From 1857, the Hendersons also served as architects to The Union Bank. William died before 1892, and his son, William Low Henderson, died in 1899, but the practice continued under the name William Henderson & Son after his passing.
