Description
Fordyce House is a 2-storey, irregular 5-bay house, allegedly built in 1718, though it has undergone considerable alterations and additions, primarily in the 19th century. The house features projecting single-storey wings that form a U-plan courtyard, linked by low coped walls, with additional rear wings. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins and dressings. The entrance is off-centre and includes a panelled door, while there is a central stair window. The left bay projects as a full-height late 19th-century gabled bay with bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors. The house has single-storey and two-storey rear additions, mainly with 4-pane glazing. The chimney stacks are coped and panelled, featuring tall late 19th-century crenellated barley-sugar twist paired chimney cans, and the roofs are covered with Banffshire and other slates.
Inside, the house has been significantly altered over the years, including the re-siting of the staircase in the late 19th century. The ground floor kitchen at the east side retains its original ceiling height.
The steading, dating from the early to mid-19th century, is a single-storey U-plan structure made of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. A detached portion on the east side has been converted to garage use, while the remainder is in poor condition and disused.
The garden is enclosed by high coped rubble walls, which are irregularly shaped and partially shared with the burial ground and old Fordyce Church. There are three square-headed bee boles recessed low in the south-facing portion of the wall.
