Description

This is a late 19th-century double villa, located at 58 Queen’s Road, Aberdeen, and includes boundary walls and gatepiers. The building is two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and has four bays. The south-east (principal) elevation is constructed of finely finished, tooled coursed grey granite, while the rest of the exterior uses granite rubble. The detailing includes a base course, panelled aprons, a dividing band course, and eaves course, with contrasting light grey dressings to quoins and single windows.

The symmetrical south-east elevation features basket-arched doorways with corniced consoles and stone steps flanked by railings, leading to panelled timber doors with etched panels and letterbox fanlights. Single windows are positioned above each bay on the first floor, with aprons flanked by stylized scrolls. Decorative bipartite dormers are incorporated into the attic floor, topped with a dentil cornice and elegantly piended fishscale slate roofs with iron finials. Outer left and right bays are gabled and contain three-light canted windows extending through the basement, ground, and first floors, with a balustraded parapet forming a balcony to the attic floor. Basket-arched windows are on the ground floor, and bipartite segmental-arched windows are in the attic. Narrow window openings are set into the gableheads, and a large stone finial adorns the apex.

The north-east elevation is gabled with a window centrally placed on each floor. A later addition of windows flanks the left side at the first and attic floors. The north-west elevation includes two basement windows centered around doorways, with regular fenestration to the ground and first floors above. Bipartite windows are positioned on the basement, ground, and first floors of the outer left and right bays. A modern rectangular dormer is visible through the attic of the adjacent property at number 56, while two canted dormers and skylights are present in the attic floor of number 58. The south-west elevation is gabled, with a window centrally positioned on each floor.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with two and four panes. The roof is covered in grey slate with a lead ridge. Features include coped stone skews with moulded skewputts, coped gablehead and ridge stacks with octagonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Some original interior details remain, including etched glass inner doors with stained glass fanlights, round-arched niches, timber staircases with turned balusters and decorative newel posts over all floors, and decorative light wells. Decorative mouldings are present, particularly neo-classical ceilings and a frieze on the first floor. Fireplaces have largely been removed.

The boundary walls are constructed of square-plan corniced granite ashlar gatepiers, a coped low granite wall (rough-faced), and a granite and brick rubble wall with a coping.
