Description

This is a two-storey and attic, four-bay eclectic double villa built in 1885, designed by Pirie and Clyne and constructed by John Morgan. The building is located at 46 Queen’s Road, Aberdeen, and comprises two semi-detached villas mirroring each other. It is constructed of rough-faced grey granite with finer finishes to the margins. A dark grey granite base course runs along the ground, and a moulded cill course is present at the first floor level. An eaves course and a parapet lie above, between the pediments on the principal elevation.

The south-east (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with two mirrored, two-bay villas. Broad doorways are centrally positioned on the ground floor, each supported by decorative half-volute brackets below the lintels and featuring panelled timber doors, deeply set at No. 48, with glazed panels flanking and broad fanlights above. Single windows are above on the first floor, with reveals waisted towards the base. Three-light bowed windows extend through the ground and first floors in the bays to the far left and right, creating a balcony for the attic floor. These windows feature pilastered mullions with a sunken fillet at the capital of the first floor. The attic floor is pedimented, flanked by two deep scrolls and featuring windows with decorative half-volutes below the lintels. Large decorative paterae are centred in the pediments, with scrolled acroteria and wallhead stacks flanking the pediments on the inside.

The north-east elevation is gabled with a flat-roofed wing to the left, which adjoins 50 Queen’s Road (listed separately). It has scrolled coping and a window to the return. The north-west elevation is four-bay with regular fenestration in the central bays and features two canted dormers with four-pane skylights. Gabled attic floor bays are positioned to the outer left and right, with inset windows. There are a single-storey and two-storey piend-roofed additions to the left, and a modern addition to the right. The southwest elevation is gabled, with a flat-roofed wing to the left with scrolled coping, along with a doorway and window to the return.

The building mainly features two-pane and four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate with a lead ridge, featuring stone skews. Corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks have circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.

The interiors of both houses retain staircases with distinctively turned balusters, as well as simple cornices and mouldings. Fireplaces have predominantly been removed; however, fine etched glass inner doors are present at No. 46.

Gatepiers and low, rough-faced granite boundary walls using an Aberdeen bond are located on the south-east side. A square-plan gatepier, with a pyramidal cap, stands to the right and is shared with the adjacent property. There is a decorative gatepier to the left, shared with 50 Queen’s Road (listed separately), possessing a battered rough-faced granite base, a finely finished shaft, a corniced top with a pink and grey granite banded pyramidal cap and a spherical finial. Granite and brick coped rubble walls complete the remainder of the boundary.
