Description

The property at 43 Queen's Road, Aberdeen, comprises a pair of semi-detached villas, built in 1895 to the designs of architect Marshall Mackenzie and builder John Morgan. Later additions and alterations have been made. The villas are two storeys with a basement and attic, presented as a four-bay arrangement.

The northwest elevation, the principal facade, is symmetrical, reflecting the paired villas. It is constructed of rough-faced grey granite ashlar, with finely finished pink granite margins. The design features a ground floor cill course and a dividing band course, with moulded cills on the northwest elevation. The centre bays of the ground floor have broad, round-arched doorways with waisted jambs, moulded impost details, alternating rough-faced and finely finished granite voussoirs, keystone detailing, and deeply recessed doors. No. 41 and 41A have pilastered doors with panelled and glazed elements, while No. 43 and 43A feature a pilastered doorway with small-pane glazed timber doors, topped with a broad fanlight. Above, there are two windows to the first floor. The attic is set within a mansard infill, featuring two gableted dormers. Gabled outer bays accommodate three-light canted ground floor windows with a parapet enclosing a first-floor balcony. Tripartite windows are located on the first floor, and the attic floor is slightly advanced on corbel brackets, with tripartite windows centred in the gableheads. Queenpost details and overhanging eaves are visible, along with iron sunflower finials to the apexes.

The southwest elevation is gabled with irregular fenestration and includes a doorway leading to the basement. The southeast elevation is near-symmetrical, incorporating a full-height basement and projecting lean-to additions to the ground floor of the two central bays. Infill is present where the basement level has been altered at No. 41. First-floor windows are above each bay, with advanced bays to the outer left and right featuring bipartite basement windows, tripartite ground floor windows, and bipartite first-floor windows. Four rectangular dormers with catslide roofs are located in the attic floor. The northeast elevation is gabled with irregular fenestration.

Most windows are sash and case, with plate glass or two-pane lower sashes and small-pane upper sashes. Timber plate glass windows are found on the ground floor of No. 41, while PVCu glazing replicating the original pattern is present on the remainder of the northwest elevation of No. 41, with two-pane glazing to the rear. Timber windows are used throughout No. 43. The roof is grey slate with a terracotta ridge. The construction includes stone skews with blocked skewputts, coped gableheads, stacks that break through the roof pitch with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not inspected in 2000.

The property is enclosed by square-plan, rough-faced granite gatepiers (shared with adjacent villas) linked by low, coped walls. Granite coped rubble walls divide the gardens to the northwest, while higher brick coped rubble walls run along the south, sweeping downwards.
