Description

This is a pair of semi-detached villas, originally designed by Marshall Mackenzie and built by John Morgan in 1895. They were later altered and are now linked to the property at 53 Queen’s Road.

The buildings are constructed of roughly faced, coursed grey granite ashlar, with finely finished pink granite margins to the north-west (principal) elevation. The remaining exterior is of coursed granite rubble. The north-west elevation presents a symmetrical facade, mirroring the two villas. It features two broad, round-arched doorways in the centre bays of the ground floor. The jambs of these doorways are waisted towards the base, with moulded detailing above and alternating rough-faced and finely finished granite voussoirs culminating in a keystone. The doorway to number 49 Queen's Road has a recessed, panelled timber door flanked by glazed panels, while number 51 has replacement glazed doors. The first floor features two windows above the doorways. A single, rectangular dormer window is located on the left side of the attic floor, with two skylights behind. The gabled outer bays have three-light, canted windows on the ground floor and tripartite windows on the first floor. A balcony is enclosed by a parapet on the first floor, and the attic floor is slightly advanced on corbel brackets with tripartite windows centred in the gableheads. The roof has overhanging eaves, and iron finials shaped like sunflowers are at the apexes.

The south-west elevation is largely obscured by a connecting link to 53 Queen’s Road. The south-east elevation is asymmetrical and includes a full-height basement. It has two windows in the centre two bays on both the ground and first floors, with a ground-floor balcony to the right, and a projecting timber oriel window to the outer-right bay. The first floor above the oriel has a bipartite window. A bay to the left is advanced, with bipartite windows to each floor. Four rectangular dormers with catslide roofs are incorporated into the attic floor. The north-east elevation is gabled and has a window on both the ground and first floors.

The windows are predominantly sash and case windows with plate glass or two-pane lower sashes and small-pane upper sashes. The roof is covered in grey slate with a terracotta ridge. The stone skews have blocked skewputts, and there are coped gableheads and stacks that break the pitch, with circular cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present. The interiors were not inspected in 2000.

The property is enclosed by square-plan, roughly faced granite gatepiers to the north-west (shared with adjacent villas), with low, coped walls between. Granite coped rubble walls divide the gardens to the north-west, while high brick coped rubble walls are located to the south, sloping down.
