Description
The Hamilton School, built in 1896 to a design by Marshall Mackenzie, is a two-storey building with a basement and attic, set within a rectangular plan. It is located at 57 Queen's Road, Aberdeen. The principal facade is constructed from rough-faced pink granite ashlar with pale grey dressings, with finely finished details. The rest of the building is of granite rubble. A ground and first-floor cill course runs around the building, with long and short rusticated quoins and an eaves course and cornice.
The northwest (principal) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a decorative doorpiece in the centre bay, with Tuscan columns supporting a rusticated entablature and cornice. The doorway itself is round-arched, with rusticated voussoirs, fluted panels flanking a panelled timber door, and a decorative fanlight. Tripartite windows are set in the flanking bays at both basement and ground floor levels. Modern railings enclose the basement area. The first-floor windows maintain a regular pattern.
The southwest elevation is gabled and includes a flat-roofed addition at ground floor level, with a window positioned centrally above it on the first floor. A single window is set into the gablehead on the left. The southeast elevation is near-symmetrical, with a full basement floor and a generally regular pattern of windows across all floors, though windows to the right are slightly broader and the windows in the centre bay are off-centre to the left. Two dormers pierce the attic floor.
The northeast elevation is also gabled, and connects to 55 Queen's Road at both basement and ground floor levels, including a doorway on the left return. Barred openings are visible in the centre bays above, while a small window is positioned off-centre to the right within the gablehead.
The majority of the windows are timber casements, featuring plate glass in the central panes, with two-pane lower sashes and small panes above. The roof is covered in grey slate, with lead ridge detailing. Stone skews have blocked skewputts. Corniced gablehead stacks and a coped wallhead stack are located at the rear, topped with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted.
The interior retains elaborate features, including a substantial number of mouldings, architraves, some panelled doors, cornices, and fire surrounds. A two-leaf glazed inner door leads into an elaborately panelled hallway, which has decorative ceiling mouldings and a fire surround. A fine staircase features fretwork and turned balusters.
The gatepiers, railings and boundary walls consist of corniced, square-plan, rough-faced granite gatepiers to the northwest (shared with adjacent properties). Low, coped walls connect these, surmounted by railings which are a later addition. The remainder of the boundary is formed of granite and brick coped rubble walls.
