Description

Maryfield West Nursing Home, located at 31 Queen's Road in Aberdeen, was designed by Brown & Watt in 1892 and has undergone later additions and alterations. This 2-storey villa features a basement and attic, with a three-bay layout. The building is constructed from rough-faced grey granite, with finely finished margins on the northwest elevation, while the rest is made of coursed granite rubble. It has a contrasting dark grey base course, a ground and first floor cill course, and pilastered mullions on the first floor that extend to form a cornice below the eaves, which are overhanging.

The northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, is asymmetrical. It has a central doorway on the ground floor, accessed by stone steps flanked by a low splayed wall. The doorway features finely finished geometric squat pilasters that flank a fanlight and support an architrave, leading to a two-leaf panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight. Above, there is a window in the center of the first floor, with bipartite windows in the bay to the right on both the ground and first floors, and a slender pilastered mullion on the first floor. To the left, there is a broad canted bay that extends through the ground and first floors, with a window on each facet and a piended roof.

The southwest elevation is blank, with a flue that advances to the center from the basement to the eaves. The southeast elevation has its center bay obscured by modern additions, while the bay to the right features a canted window through the basement and ground floor, along with a bipartite window on the first floor. The bay to the left has regular fenestration. The northeast elevation has flues that advance to the left and right, with a window in the center of the first floor.

The building predominantly features 2-pane and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring lead ridges. There are corniced wallhead stacks with circular cans and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000. The property also includes square-plan gatepiers on the northwest side, which are shared with adjacent properties. These gatepiers have corniced necks and shallow pyramidal caps, with a low coped wall between them, and granite and brick coped rubble walls surrounding the remainder of the property.
