Description
54 Queen's Road is a pair of two-storey and attic, four-bay eclectic double villas, built in 1885 to the designs of Pirie and Clyne, with John Morgan as the builder. The buildings are constructed of rough-faced grey granite, with finer detailing to the margins. A dark grey granite base course, ground floor cill course, and moulding cill course to the first floor are present, along with a sunken fillet course at the first floor impost level and an eaves course. A parapet sits between the pediments of the principal elevation.
The south-east (principal) elevation is symmetrical, comprising two mirrored, semi-detached villas. The central bays of the ground floor feature broad doorways with decorative half-volute brackets below the lintels, deep-set panelled timber doors with glazed panels flanking, and broad fanlights. Single windows are situated above, with reveals waisted towards the base. Bowed three-light windows run through the ground and first floors of the bays to the outer left and right, creating a balcony to the attic floor; these windows feature pilaster mullions with a sunken fillet at the capital to the first floor. The pedimented attic floor is flanked by two deep scrolls, with a window to each, and decorative half-volutes below the lintels. Large decorative paterae are centred in the pediments, alongside scrolled acroteria, and wallhead stacks flank the pediments on the interior side.
The north-east elevation features a gabled, two-storey flat-roofed wing adjoining the building to the right, incorporating a doorway and window to the left return, finished with an eaves blocking course. The north-west elevation is near-symmetrical, with four bays, broad doorways to the centre two bays at ground floor level, matching windows above, and canted dormers to the attic. Rectangular dormers with cat-slide roofs also extend from the attic. Single-storey wings are advanced to the outer left and right, the wing to the left having modern additions.
The south-west elevation has a gabled form with a flat-roofed wing to the left, incorporating scrolled coping, a doorway, and a window to the left return.
The majority of windows are two-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate, with lead ridges, stone skews, a corniced wallhead, gablehead stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior of both houses retains staircases with distinctively turned timber balusters, simple cornices and mouldings, though the fireplaces have largely been removed.
The property is bordered by coped, low, rough-faced granite Aberdeen bond walls to the south-east. A square-plan gatepier with a pyramidal cap sits to the left, shared with an adjacent property. A decorative gatepier to the right is shared with number 50 Queen's Road (listed separately). The gatepier has a battered rough-faced granite base, a finely finished shaft, a corniced top with pink and grey granite banded pyramidal cap, and a spherical finial. The remaining boundary walls are constructed of granite and brick rubble with a stone and brick coping.
