Description

St Margaret of Scotland Episcopalian Church, located on Gallowgate in Aberdeen, was designed by James Matthews in 1870, with two additional chapels added by J Ninian Comper in 1889 and 1908. The rectory, created by George Irvine, dates from 1908. This aisleless church features smaller chapels to the south and west, along with a two-storey and attic L-plan rectory to the southwest. It is prominently situated, overlooking the city. The building is constructed from tooled, coursed granite rubble with cream sandstone dressings and includes some Gothic tracery windows. The church has late 20th-century roof dormers.

The entrance elevation faces south and features steps leading to an off-centre, advanced crow-stepped gabled porch with a round-arched entrance. To the right of the entrance is a large carved timber crucifix.

The rectory has predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The main church roof is covered with grey slates, while the rectory and chapels have red pantiles. The rectory also features raised skews and skewputts, as well as a coped wallhead and gable stacks.

Inside, the nave boasts an open timber roof with rafters that spring from stone corbels. There are steps leading to a raised sanctuary, and the chapel to the south has three pointed-arched openings. The church contains a carved decorative oak altar, pulpit, and pews. The south chapel features an intricately carved, partly gilded open timber screen, while the west chapel has a finely decorated wrought-iron chancel screen. The church is adorned with good quality stained glass windows, some of which were created by Ninian Comper, depicting various liturgical themes.

Surrounding the church complex is a high, coped, coursed rubble boundary wall.
