114-120 Union Street, Aberdeen

1 Back Wynd in Aberdeen is a former Advocates' Hall built between 1836 and 1837 by John Smith, with later alterations by A Marshal Mackenzie in 1898. This three-storey, four-bay Classical building is located on a prominent corner site and features a distinctive curved corner with a central window opening and flanking bays that have paired giant Ionic columns. The ground floor has been altered for shops, and the building is constructed of grey granite ashlar with channelled rustication at the base. It includes a cornice at the ground floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The first-storey openings have consoled and corniced architraves, while above them are various small square and circular openings.

The corner bay is flanked by single bays with Ionic pilasters, and the outer bay facing Union Street to the south also has similar pilasters. The section facing Back Wynd to the east has a three-bay pedimented design with shallow pilasters dividing the bays. Adjoining to the west is a simple Classical three-storey, three-bay tenement building made of granite ashlar. The upper storeys of Nos 114-120 feature predominantly plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the tenement at No 122 has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The shop fronts are fitted with plate glass.
