Description

The Union Street Screen Wall is a significant structure dating from the 16th century, located in the city center graveyard surrounding the Kirk of St Nicholas in Aberdeen. This area includes the triumphal arch designed by John Smith in 1829-30 and a classical screen facing Union Street to the south, along with a single-storey, three-bay classical lodge to the north. The graveyard features many high-quality carved and decorative grave monuments in various styles, with origins from the 17th century onwards. Notable monuments include a square-plan classical monument to Dr. Robert Hamilton, dating from around 1843, which has a tall base with four Doric corner columns supporting an entablature that encloses a simple urn, as well as 17th-century mural monuments with intricate carvings, table tombs, and upright classical monuments.

To the south, there is a fine granite ashlar classical screen featuring Ionic columns and a cornice, with square-plan Doric pilastered end blocks. The central entrance is designed in a triumphal arch style, flanked by paired Ionic pilasters and topped with a cornice. A decorative central iron gate and railings are situated between the columns.

The boundary walls consist of coped rubble walls to the north, west, and east, some of which are adorned with iron railings. The gatepiers to the east and north are made of coped, panelled granite ashlar, with the eastern gatepiers featuring decorative urns.
