Description

The Salvation Army Citadel, located at 25-30 Castle Street in Aberdeen, is a large 4-storey and attic, 7-bay building designed in the Scots Baronial style by James Souttar between 1893 and 1896. This U-plan complex features a castellated design with multi-gabled roofs and includes a hall, flats, and shops, although the shops on the ground floor have been altered. The building is constructed from grey granite ashlar on the east side, while the north and south elevations are made of dark coursed granite with light-colored dressings. Notable architectural features include corner turrets, bartizans, string courses, and a corbelled and crenellated parapet. The principal elevation facing east showcases segmental arched windows.

The asymmetrical elevations are highlighted by large recessed segmental-arched windows in the central three bays, which consist of 2-light arched windows with a round window above. To the left, there is a slightly advanced bay with steps leading to a round-arched entrance porch, which has corbelled oriel windows above. A prominent square-plan turreted tower rises from the roof, featuring a corbelled round crenellated turret at the northwest corner.

The building predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows, with some windows in the hall displaying colored emblematic glass. The roof is covered with grey slate, and the turrets are adorned with grey fish-scale slating.

Inside, the Citadel has a 3-storey central hall that includes a stage and a three-sided gallery supported by decorative columns, along with timber flooring. Some of the larger rooms feature timber dado-panelling, while the flats have undergone significant alterations.
